Train services across the east have returned to normal after nearly 20 hours of disruption caused by overhead line and signalling problems in Essex.

Services were cancelled and times changed as far apart as Norwich and London from Wednesday night to late Thursday morning.

Engineers worked through the night on repairs to power lines and signalling.

Eleven services were cancelled and six others altered, including trains between London, Ipswich and Norwich.

Ellen Rossitter, from National Express East Anglia, apologied for the inconvenience to travellers.

Many passengers suffered disruption to their journeys on Wednesday night because of severe weather causing problems, National Express East Anglia said.

These problems continued into morning services.
